2020:
SYMMETRY paintings by Thyra

In 2020 Thyras’s symmetric paintings reached world wide exposure by REUTERS and EURONEWS. Previously Thyra’s works has also been widely exposed by BBC, CNN, RAI and Euronews. Some of this press coverage is presented in the 5 min. documentary about her work, or TV press coverage can be found here.

Andy Warhol was the first to bring Rorschach symmetry into contemporary art. Only now do these works receive a follow-up in contemporary art, in the form of Thyra Hilden’s large symmetrical works that bring Rorschach reflections to life with colors and vital figuration. According to research, Thyra Hilden is the first in art history to make large symmetrical Rorschachs in color. The pictures are painted with bold thick layers of oil, combined with thin Rorschach prints, also in oil that gives a unique texture.

With a very simple grip, symmetry, Thyra Hilden paintings are always iconically recognizable. Her paintings has a powerful craftsmanship, conceptual signature and clear identity.

Thyra explain: “The symmetrical paintings start as organic wild strokes and Rorschach prints, as wild and vital as nature, but when wild things are repeated into details, order and harmony emerge. Symmetry gives me the feeling that a consciousness is present because almost all creatures are symmetrical.

If we repeat things, what do we repeat? My paintings are inspired by the vertically mirrored Rorschach-images used by science to tap into the unconscious. The Rorschach-images are an invitation to the imagination. I see a playful chaos, alchemy, colours and forms. The symmetry build harmony. The same goes for nature. Billion of living creatures seem symmetric. In the mirror axis a bridge arises which connects and separates. The axis is a crack that raises questions of life, chaos, choice and possibly a lack of cohesion? Cracks and irregularities become apparent in the mirror. Here the magic occurs and we understand that there is more than what meets the eye.”
